Tree Peony

Astounding Beauty

Known as the King of Flowers in China. The moment I had my first bounty of lush blooms, I had a better appreciation of why the tree peony is called the King of Flowers. Tree peonies with their large, bold flowers are treasured and prized in many Asian cultures. Originally from China, the tree peony is historically also valued as a medicinal plant in Chinese and Japanese culture. They are hardy shrubs and can last for many years. In China, some peonies have lasted several 100 years! The popularity of these flowers in Europe started in the 19th century, were tree peonies and the herbaceous bush peonies took a more prominent place in gardens. Read below where to plant and how to grow and care for a tree peony.

Tree Peonies (genus Paeonia) are deciduous, perennial shrubs with woody stems. It bears showy blooms early in the season in abundance. They are easy to grown and also make great spring cut flowers. Though slow to establish, tree peonies are worth the wait. There are various colours and sizes – some are tall, while others are dwarf and spreading in dimensions. Our tree peony is likely the ‘High Noon’. However, someone thought it may be the ‘Age of Gold’. We are still debating. No matter which type or colour you select, I expect you will be delighted to have a tree peony in your garden.

Where to Plant And How to Care For A Tree Peony

These deer-resistant shrubs should be planted in a sunny location. Ideally, an east-facing sunny spot that is sheltered from the hot afternoon sun.

Consider the size of the location in relation to your plant’s expected size at maturity. Once established, tree peonies don’t like to be moved.

Tree peonies prefer fertile, well-drained soil.

Unlike herbaceous perennial peonies, tree peonies do not need to be cut down after their foliage has died in autumn. While annual pruning is not required either, occasional light pruning can help keep its shape.
